Dexam and I saw Over the Hedge and Pirates of the Caribbean recently. Over the Hedge was a hoot, despite the kids in the cinema, and we both really enjoyed it. Hamilton the Squirrel is my favourite character though all of them were well-rounded. The movie avoided being cutesy, which is a big plus in my oppinion as I like animated movies but can't stand saccharine (I cheered for the Evil Queen in Snow White).

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was also very good. Its fairly long but didn't feel like it. The story moved well throughout the flick. There was a little more visual comedy than in the first one though not so much that it seemed like slapstick. The actors all gave great performances. I heartily recommend it, arrr!

I just saw Pirates of the...

it was good indeed, though slightly more violent and way much more people dying than in the last one

my parents didn't like it because "unlike the first one, this wasn't credible"
I mean, you can buy it that a cursed, undead crew on the ship of the damned are looking for gold that's calling for them and a ship with sails full of holes is faster than any other, etc,
but you can't belive in a ship that sails under water and a captain looking like a squid (ILLITHIDS ARE COMING!) that commands a big beast of the sea

I sure as hell wonder what they expected after seeing the first one

I thought it was really good too, so did the rest of my family. Some bits were absolutely hilarious.[:D] It was more violent, but with the kraken, everything is violent. I did a project on that once, even though the kraken isn't real.
I really can't wait for the next one to come out![O]

I really liked Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Like the first movie, it's a fun swashbuckler that doesn't take itself too seriously.  There are a bunch of cool stunt sequences (my favorite being a three way duel between Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Norrington) and the CGI is the best I've seen since WETA brought Gollum to life. I was certain Davy Jones was created by prosthetic makeup until I learned otherwise. [:O] There are a bunch of callbacks to the first movie and most of the characters return, so it's worth watching Curse of the Black Pearl before going to see Dead Man's Chest.  The new characters introduced are great additions to the cast as well, my favorites being Tia Dalma the voodoo witch and Davy Jones himself, who is like Cthulu's smaller, piratically inclined Scottish cousin. [:D]  Like the first Pirates movie it does run a little long, but I won't hold that against it, since the time flies by fairly fast (like with most good movies). This is the sort of film that, like Van Helsing, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the first Pirates flick, I'll pop into my DVD player on a rainy day when I need cheering up. [:)]

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest gets a 9 on the Kayless-O-Meter.

wow, same here

SPOILER WARNING!

I really liked some scenes like when they were climbing in the 2 cages...
"Hurry, we'll need every man to sail the Pearl"
"No, actually we just need six"
....
....
"HURRY!!!"

also, what happened the the chick Jack owed a ship? Figured she'd be around since she played about as big a part as the rest of the final Pearl Crew from the first film, maybe a little bigger... she can't have died, no?

I was looking for Anna-Maria too. I don't know what happened to her. Perhaps she got et or possibly we find out in the third movie.

Considering she was one of the few members of Jack's crew who wasn't a faceless extra (along with Gibbs, the midget pirate, and Cotton and his Parrot) it's a bit strange she didn't return. Maybe the actress was busy.

Maybe she was a crew member who got "caged"?

After all, she *is* rather tasty... [;)]

Has anyone else seen Stormbreaker? I thought it was really good. The gadgets are cool, and so's the fighting. Did you know that Alex Pettyfer did as many of his own stunts as he could, including all the fight scenes? They took him out of school and gave him a Martial Arts teacher for 2 weeks.

Even with all the errors and inconsistenties (did I spell that right?) that have been pointed out, I really enjoyed it. Overall I give it 10 out of 10.

I know this is rather late but from the trailer, Stormbreaker does look interesting, I'll probably pick it up on DVD at some point. Clearly you rate it highly.

I really liked it because I like action and the basic storyline is cool, but there are two girls in my grade who thought it was really bad. They could have just been trying to annoy me though. Two of my friends and my mum liked it as well.
In other words, there are mixed feelings about it in people I know.

Has anyone else seen Eragon? I thought it was pretty good, even though it was very different to the books.

I haven't seen yet. Apparently the reviews haven't been all that good, but the graphics like the dragon from what I've seen in the trailers look pretty good.

Yeah. First dragon I've ever seen with feathers, though.

Hot Fuzz
(UK age certificate: 15)

If anyone has the chance go and see Hot Fuzz, it is one of the funniest films I've seen since Shaun of the Dead.

The story follows Police Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg), a brilliant policeman...sorry, police officer who is so good that he makes the rest of the Metropolitan police service (the London ones) look bad. He's sent to the sleepy West Country village of Sandford, which has the lowest crime rate in the country. However not is all as quiet as it seems as soon a spate of grizzly deaths start occuring in the village. Sergeant Angel teamed up with an inexperienced Police Constable Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) believes that there is murder afoot.

Hot Fuzz is from the makers of Shaun of the Dead and is done in a similar vain. This time the target of their spoofing isn't zombie flicks but cop films. Car chases, foot chases, gun battles, explosions, everything you'd expect in a Hollywood blockbuster is here...but in small village in England. The first eighty minutes of the two hour movie has more of the investigation / detective side of cop films, plenty of jokes and dark humour to be had here. The last forty minutes though is pretty much non-stop action. They've merged all the American action cop films and transplanted them into rural England to great effect and humour. For instance in America their car chases are done with big, powerful, V8 muscle cars driving very quickly down crowded streets and highways, here it's done by two, diesel hatchbacks.

The acting is good with fine performances by Pegg and Frost, who are at the heart of the movie. Plus they are ably supported by top quality British actors both comic and serious. One of the best performances goes to Timothy Dalton who plays the local supermarket owner.

All round this is a fine and very funny movie; definitely one to watch.

I have just watched the trailer for a new film coming out shortly called 300. It is based on the comicbook by Frank Miller (the man who wrote Sin City) and is a depiction of the first Battle of Thermoplyae in Greece where 300 Spartan warriors (the 300 of the film title) fought to the death against anywhere between 250,000 to 2,000,000 Persians. By the looks of the trailer the style of the movie will make up for any historical inaccuracies. I'll be watching this when it comes out.
