    Re: D&D Knowledge, Freely dispensed

Well,I have a question. Is there a minimun amount of years you had to have trained to be a paladin? I know to be considered an adult human in DnD you have to be 15 but what about training for the various classes? Unfortunately I lost my my Player's Handguide and so am not sure.

Incidently,I wonder why anyone here hasn't tried to play a campaign here.It seems we have a lot of DnD players and I can only imagine the zany campaigns they could pull off.

the random ages for a human for Paladin is 1d6 so anywhere from one to six years... same as a fighter which is pretty much what a Paladin is, they just have devine blessing. The random ages are different for every race, the longest being elf and gnome which is 6d6 years, which could add up to a whopping 36 years of training!

As for campaigns, I have played in and ran a few games over in the roleplaying section of the  top webcomic forums.

I'm having trouble finding this roleplaying section.  Please, direct me as to its location, so that I may sally forth, and get jiggy-with-it.

What he said. Things have been slow as of late, real life and the like I imagine but a good number of games are still active. I wish Qesun would post more, "We're not alone" is a great game and my paladin character rocks, I've spent the whole game forming alliances with the various guilds... it's been going good.

My RP skills are no way as good as my RPG skills, I work best when dealing with a character put in a setting, so I'm still finding my legs.

I actually prefer rping to rpgs, I think they're more flexible. And I don't have to repeatedly chastise my brother to keep him from acting out of alignment.

    Begin Transmission...

Random D&D tidbit of the day:

The Illusion and Conjuration schools of magic have the most sub-school divisions of the magic classifications, with five distinct seperations each.

Figment, Glamer, Pattern, Phantasm, and Shadow for Illusion...

and Calling, Creation, Healing, Summoning, and Teleportation for Conjuration.

    ...End Transmission.

    Re: D&D Knowledge, Freely dispensed

Here's a D&D problem even the gurus here can't solve:

    My brother. Rargh!

    >The Beginning...

     He creates a ranger.
-I express doubts that he can role play a 'good' character. After all, the boy's wanted in every town in Fable for killing small children.
Yes, *insert my bro's name here*, rangers have to be good.
    Because those are the rules.
No, you can't be an elf either if your a ranger. You can be a half elf.
    Yes, I know that sucks.
    But those are the rules.
Just roll your damn stats already.

    >My dad and I then spent most of every session telling him the following.
You're Choatic Good. Act within your alignment. That means you can't randomly murder people.
Quit goofing off and roll for initiative.

    >Later...
    ...
What do you mean, you didn't buy any food?
    Yes, I have some food.
I also have a waterskin, a torch, 50 feet of rope, a backpack and some belt pouches to put things in, and a map case.
    No, I won't share.
It's not my fault you didn't buy anything besides your weapons and armor.
    Aren't you a Boy Scout?
Isn't the Scout motto "be prepared"?
I'm not being a ***, I'm acting in accordance with my alignment.
    I'm Chaotic Nuetral
    Fine, I'll share.
But only because my mage/thief needs someone to hide behind.
You need to give me something for the food though. It wasn't free.
    ...
No, I don't want the kobold head you've been carrying around.
Why the hell did you take that anyway?

Now, imagine this going on for hours, every session.

He's jus so... irritating. And we can't get rid of him because the palyers consist of me, him, and my dad, the DM.

    Re: D&D Knowledge, Freely dispensed

    Phoenix of Borg:

Here's a D&D problem even the gurus here can't solve:

    My brother. Rargh!

A challenge this be, if ever I doth lay eyes on one.

Truly, siblings, both younger and older, can be a great soure of irritation and consternation, but fear not! There are ways that you, if being apt of diplomacy and willing to compromise, could possibly reduce the amount of irratation and chafing caused by your brother.

What immediately jups out is his desire to be a chaotic force of wanton destruction. Admittedly, this style of play doesn't mesh well with the standard 'heroic' party, the whole premise of D&D is to be something that you are not. Take for example this anecdote of mine:

"I have a friend that, when not being the DM, likes to play a wizard. Always. Every, friggen time. And he usually has an owl familiar. That or a monkey. And though he changes up the spelling, he has used the same name for his wizard characters for the last year and a half. Talk about getting old. By this point, he is no longer role-playing, just filling a role."

So you see, if we do not try new and different things, and do the same thing over and over and over again, then what's the point. So, my adivce to this situation is this. Talk with your brother, and explain that playing with him just isn't fun when he acts the way he does. Convince him that would be much more entertaining for all involved if he tried something new and completely different, say for example a cleric who seeks to heal all the world's hurts, or some-such. In return (if possible, seeing as your DM is also Dad, some further compromise on this second issue may be required), you could offer to play a few missions as evil characters. People who are out to raise themselves in the world, and are willing to step on the backs of the little guy to get there. Admittedly, slaying random persons within a town or city should still have its drawbacks with local law enforcement, it could possibly play into his character's personality. And trust me, at least once, everyone should run an evil campaign. It feels strangely therapuetic. (Again, the ability to run a party of evil bastards is completely at the discretion of the DM, who in your case is also the rules maker of the house.)

    Re: D&D Knowledge, Freely dispensed

We solved this when we played last night. My brother attacked a townsperson. My Dad says, Okay, role to hit. End result, one dead townsperson, one ranger dead at the hands of the local guards. My character, a CN mage/rogue, made sure to be very far away with my dads NC cleric named Mo (A Jehova's witness...), and when questioned by the guards, we professed to have never met him. And then, in the tavern, we chanced to meet a barbarian fighter who joined our party, and for now, at least, my brother is content to only unleash his murderous urges on evil things.

I do hate it when others mess around or don't understand the rules, it gets irritating.

    Scratchit: But he's a cripple!
Blackadder: He's not a cripple, Mrs Scratchit. Occasionally saying "Phew! My leg hurts!" when he remembers to wouldn't fool Baldrick!

    Re: D&D Knowledge, Freely dispensed

Question about spell-like abilities: Are they intuitive or learned? For example, if a character had a spell-like ability due to his/her race, could s/he still have that ability if s/he had never had any contact with his/her race- basically, have it and not know s/he had it?

Forgive me if this question was incoherent.
