: Bandwidth: The Devil

DarkShive
Ever since making the top ten, I've been getting a lot of new readers. This makes me very happy :D , but also very concerned because all the new members (based on my daily bandwidth) enjoy going through the entire archives :errr: . I wouldn't care except supposedly bad things will happen if my bandwidth is too high and it's supposed to be about 50 megs a day (which I managed once everything was averaged) and yesterday it was about 307 megs  . To try to reduce the incoming bandwidth caused by new readers, I've set it up so I have no banner on the top 150 list. My site is still listed in it's ultra-fine #7 position, but without the banner odds are less likely I'll get a lot of new readers. That, and whenever the top 150 was shown about 10 kb was being added to my bandwidth thanks to that banner  . I don't know what kind of traffic the TWC gets, but if they were to get 1000 viewers a day (I bet they get more), that would be 10 Megs of bandwidth right there. So I'll see if this helps and hopefully I'll be able to stay on the top 150 list and not just on the sites list. As far as improving how much bandwidth my site can handle, I'll probably be switching to a new space provider as soon as I can figure out exactly how to go about getting my site to produce some cash as at the moment the site is costing me money and isn't making me any money back, which makes it all the more difficult to get more bandwidth. :jester:

in that case what you need is a beneficiary with lots of spare unused bandwidth to host your site. If you get ADSL, or a nice cable connex, you could host it yourself. Fine, it may be a bit slower, but that doesnt matter. In the meantime, try doing some advertising. Sites Like thinkGeek or other computer related sites may be a good idea to try

Actually, I may be switching to the service provider Sluggy uses. Sluggy gets about 200,000 visitors a day (according to Shirt Guy Tom), and their plans would be affordable assuming I can get ads up and such (no pop ups though; they be far too evil). Thanks for the advice regarding who to advertise with, I'll check them out when I get a chance.

Weirdo
go fer it. I know a mate who runs his own hosting company www.maxhosting.co.uk . Pretty damn good things on there. But 200000 visitors a day, wow, i can barely manage 1000 on my site :(

for the time being, bandwidth seems to be down to a manageable size. 5000 megs per month divided by 125 megs per day means I'd be fine with a 40 day month, so I've got some time to sort everything out and do this roight.

Weirdo
5gb a month? Thats it? Man is that pretty poor bandwidth. 10gb - 20Gb is pretty cheap at the moment with some hosts, your site dont use specialist scripting, so it should be pretty cheap to find a high bandwidth hosting supplier. Definately consider moving tho, cause 5gb a month, for a webcomic, really sux!

DarkShive
well, one plan I'm looking at will allow 500 megs per day and another will allow 1 gig per day. Either could be good, but it all really depends on how much my bandwidth will go up next time I advertise again. Theoritically if my experience with being on the top 10 is any indication, new readers = people going through entire archives = massive bandwidth anomolies. 15 gigs a month or 30 gigs a month without extra fees... hmm... I suppose it depends on who I can get interested in advertising and how confident I am about lots of people wanting to read my comic...

Weirdo
Well, if you get the new readrs in gradually, it aint so bad. Its just the big damn surges which kill you. As soon as you advertise, BANG your Bandwidth goes through the roof
