: The Evils of DNS

DarkShive
Ladies, Gentlemen, and Uryuoms... my domain name is registered with dotregistrar.com. That's not a bad thing. The BAD thing is that it's registered with dotregistrar.com THROUGH featureprice.com, which has an entire website devoted to spreading the word about how evil they are. Supposedly, I've pointed my domain name to the nameservers that Darren of Nukees told me to, and in theory, www.elgoonishshive.com will gradually start to point to the Keenspot version of EGS. This may not be the case, however, and problems with the domain name may occur. With that in mind, I am supplying this link:

El Goonish Shive on keenspot (http://elgoonishshive.keenspot.com/)

If www.elgoonishshive.com starts to point there, I want people to use it as opposed to the address I've given above. For now, however, with the future of the domain name being uncertain, I felt it necessary to supply the above link as a bit of insurance.

I hit the www.elgoonishshive.com link in your post and there is a Keenspot banner at the top. I assume that means that I'm hitting the proper server? Or did you add the banners to your old site as well?

Or did you add the banners to your old site as well?Nope-- if there's a keenspot thingie at the top, and if there are ads, and if there's a nifty blue-to-white background, you're seeing Keenspot. So... potential "yay!"?

showler
Everything but the blue to white background.

elgoonishshive.keenspot.com has a main.css that includes a background image.

www.elgoonishshive.com has a main.css that only includes a background colour...grey.

that's... weird. it's like you're seeing some bizarre combination of the two. Would you be able to provide a screenshot of the top of the screen?

This is what I see on my screen

And heres what I see for http://elgoonishshive.keenspot.com/

level5nerd
Interesting...if you include the www, you go to the Keenpot site; if not, you go to the old site.

Good point. If you add the www to the http://elgoonishshive.keenspot.com/ you don't get on.

(http://www.elgoonishshive.keenspot.com (http://www.elgoonishshive.keenspot.com/))/

(This is just to show you that adding the www to http://elgoonishshive.keenspot.com/ doesn't work)

cow bell man

yah as long as you don't add the .keenspot part to it.

DarkShive
DNS updating isn't instantaneous; it gradually occurs over the course of several days, which means some people see the update, and some people see it as it was for a while. My Networking class claims it only takes 2 days, Keenspot says it takes 3, and this talking dog that follows me around claims it'll take a week. My money is on the talking dog. I mean, if he can teach himself to speak without the proper vocal cords, he's gotta be a crazy-smart dog.

PS - thanks for the screenshot-ish proof of goodness. Perhaps Featureprice isn't pure evil... I'm still gonna try to get the registry switched to whatever Keenspot uses, though.

showler
This is what I'm getting with www.elgoonishshive.com:

With elgoonishshive.keenspot.com I'm getting the same as everyone else.

PREMIUM subscriber, btw, so no ad.

Prince Karo
but I don't see the banner like in the image you attached...

Showler, that's... wow. You are definitely seeing some perverse combination of the new and the old, as you are somehow getting the style sheet for the old site. My mind... is blown :bunny:

showler
Aha. I did my "click the damn reload button twenty times really fast and make the stupid browser reload everthing" trick and now all is fine. I must have had an old main.css file cached somewhere.

showler
Other minor issues. Drop-box is slid way to the left. The "calendar and newsbox" box and the "rant" box both extend too far to the sides. I'm not sure if this can be fixed considering different screen resolutions, but I believe it can be.

DarkShive
It's because of your resolution; you'll only see the second set of blue if your resolutions is beyone 1000 pixels. As for the drop-box, that can be fixed for netscape and mozilla by me putting it into it's own little table; it looks fine in IE, but Mozilla and Netscape seem unsatisfied by my use of "center". I may just place it in the news box

127.0.0.2
Well, the new site looks good, but it seems to me that it loads much slower than the old one. Perhaps because of the dropdown?

T'Renn
Yeah, the Keenspot pages will have extra stuff that Keen adds in when it builds the index page each update. That would be the dropdown, the banner ad links, the Newsbox, stuff like that. It's probably not quite as efficient as it could be, but Gav is a self-taught script programmer, and has historically had barely enough time to fix actual problems with the code. One day when his day job (nuclear medical type stuff), his other day jop (Keenspot), his own comic ( www.nukees.com (http://www.nukees.com) ) and little inconsequentialities like sleep and eating don't eat up all all his free time, he might get around to tweaking some code to make it more efficient.

However, he's been saying that for a couple years now, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

There is also the fact that the ads and Keen-added graphics also add to load time a bit. We got kind of spoiled for a while with the extremely clean and fast-loading page Dan built in getting ready for the move. However, the slight decrease in speed is worth the fact that Dan no longer has to worry about bandwidth bills. ;)

One thing to keep in mind with the Keenspot version: I occasionally have trouble with some Javascript code not downloading, and holding up the whole page when viewing Keensp$$$ comics. They do load just fine with JS turned off*, though that means Premium doesn't work. But then, ads don't bother me anyway, as long as they're not evil evil popups. :P

T'Renn

*I do have the advantage of being able to turn JS off from a menu, instead of having to dig through prefs screens. *shrug*

DarkShive
I've actually discussed this with Gav-- I mean, Darren--,and the best way for me to streamline everything is by reducing redundancy by making things that are repeated into seperate javascript files. Not that these are files with code that won't agree with every browser; all I'm doing is having document.write statements that generate html, and based on tests I've done, even the "I'm not letting Dan get away with anything" browser known as Mozilla doesn't have a problem with it. Normally, the code for the drop down menu would be redundantly hard-coded into every page; I turned mine into a seperate file, so a single user doesn't repeatedly download it with every last page. I may do this with the calenders, but that would require code beyond document.write, so some browsers could get nasty-angry... it would only save about 3 kb per page, anyway. Maybe if I get desperate someday I'll implement seperate-file calenders.

Major Kerina
When are you gonna show up on the Keenspot main page?

Imperito
Few things....

The second set of blue bars... a _little_ _teensy_ bit annoying.

The keenspot javascripts, yeah, thats a tradeoff. Like what was mentioned about the ad server having issues and those issues breaking the entire page. I've seen that a lot on other keenspot comics.

irt what you said before, what are you hosted on? What you mentioned sounds like a job for server side includes or something. Making the client work too hard for the page is why javascript gives you a dozen pages for a dozen clients.

And btw verisign sucks! (had to, in a thread with this title)

Semaw
Something that may be worthy of attention:
If I go to www.elgoonishshive.com (I still see the old site btw) the comic hasn't updated yet, yet it has on elgoonishshive.keenspot.com. This is regardless of how many time I click the refresh button. There's also no reaction thread up yet, from Dan or anyone else.

cow bell man
It's up now up on the www.elgoonishshive.com ^_^

Semaw
It's up now up on the www.elgoonishshive.com ^_^

Still not seeing it there
Oh well, I'll just have to stick to the keen site for the time being.

cow bell man
Try dumping your internet cookies or click the refresh button 5 or 6 time very fast like so it forces it to update. That might do the trick.

showler
His DNS obviously hasn't updated, and Dan will still have to manually add the comics for the old site till everyone is on Keen.

General Shade Tail
/me likes the new Keenspot site

(it updated very nicely for me)

/me likes the way the month's calendar is included on the main page

/me likes the background differentiation between story and filler pages

/me doesn't like the way Dan has shoved dummy links (...blah.htm) into the Site Map because he hasn't put up the extras yet...

All in all, methinks Keenspot is a good thing! ^_^

Ryvaken Tal`Draco
I'm not to happy with the loading speed; the old site was faster.

DarkShive
I'm not to happy with the loading speed; the old site was faster.sadly, not much I can do about that

oh yeah... should turn blah.html into a reality while waiting for REAL extras!

BLAH.HTML LIVES!!! (http://www.elgoonishshive.com/blah.html)

Semaw
sadly, not much I can do about that

oh yeah... should turn blah.html into a reality while waiting for REAL extras!

I like it :D

Ryvaken Tal`Draco
Bwahahaha

Morrighan
Seconded (or should that be thirded?)

Nice Under Construction page.

Orochi
If I go to http://www.elgoonishshive.com I get the old site.
If I got to http://elgoonishshive.com I get the Keen site.
Also, the Filler Archives don't work for me, but I think that's mainly because they're looking for page on www.elgoonishshive.com, which for me is the old site. (it just comes up with the 404 (http://www.elgoonishshive.com/notfound.htm) error)

EDIT: If I use the Filler link in the news box it works, if I use the drop-down link it doesn't. Also the drop-down filler page box is aligned left.

CRS2117
Well, the www.elgoonishshive.com didn't load for me (wasn't able to connect to remote server, or so the guru that in known as opera 7.11 tells me) but yay for saved links!

Oh and do you have to bother with buggy javascript? Opera isint fond of java or script in general. Also Iv'e been thinking about other things when writing and words come out differnently. Why general comes up as gentile or writing as wiring I don't know, my mind is a many speldored and fracal thing.

Orochi
Now when I go to www.elgoonishshive.com I get the weird mix of the Keen and old site (keen with gray background). taking out the www and just using elgoonishshive.com still works correctly though.

EDIT: Also, the filler archives don't show a calendar, which make browsing through them that much more difficult.

showler
I had the same problem at first. You have the main.css file still archived. If you can force a total reload it should fix the problem.

patchwork cat
I think DNS update is evil... :hammer:
Is it practical to use the numbers for this, while it settles down?

Orochi

Yeah that worked, and just a note to anyone else, pressing SHIFT + refresh seems to do a total reload. At least on my browsers.
