: Webcomic Eye Candy

Snake
I've always been drawn towards those webcomics with great art. If it isn't there visually, I have a hard time getting into the comic itself (call me biased, but that's the way it goes...)

I recently stumbled across No Need For Bushido (http://www.noneedforbushido.com/index.html), which is some has some of the best art that I've seen in webcomics for a long time, at least in terms of color and shading. Which made me start to wonder...

What are some other webcomics with great art?

hansagan
I love NNFB.... he recently sent me some gift art that just blew me away.

Mac Hall is always a treat to the eyes

I like expressive simplicity of Its Walky. Ditto Elf Only inn, before its untimely demise. Also AMD, for similar reasons. Achieving a lot of expression and humour with very little pixels.

Megatokyo is usually impressive, expecially his technical drawing (Piro is a qualified architect after all)

Kung Fool is good when he updates (Not very often now)

I'm sure theres others I'm forgetting, but thats all I can think of for now.

Your banner is pretty.

I'm surprised AMD was mentioned. More people seem to be offended by its art than impressed by it.

I'd like to contribute to this thread, but I'm having a hard time thinking of eye candy comics. I never notice that kind of thing. I mean, I think Angels 2200 is expertly drawn, but I don't know that I would call it eye candy. "Eye candy" seems to infer, to me at least, that it was something drawn for the sole purpose of creating something pretty to look at. If your comic is JUST pretty to look at, I have a hard time enjoying it.

I could provide a list of comics that, while not entirely beautiful, have art that perfectly fits the rest of the comic creating a sense of wholeness that just makes you feel all warm and fuzz inside. Will that do?

Slightly offtopic - Did that NNFB guy ever start that pixel art comic?

Art isn't always "Hey, look what I can do." You took a medium and still make original art, but in a fashion where you can focus more on the story and style doesn't suffer at all.

My pics are Mac Hall (Ian is a wizard), Silence, INR and Sinfest.

I usually get very divided opinions on my art. What do you guys think?

Mellonballer
I do too. I will tell myself I think recycled images are boring but then I still enjoy red meat, comic strip and dinosaur comics. I think I prefer simple art over extremely detailed for some reason. If I go to a comic site and I dont like the art in the first second I will usually exit the site immediatly. I don't read too many comics, heh.

Actually, there's a reason for that. Scott McCloud goes over it in "Understanding Comics". The section of iconography.

Basically, you don't see things perfectly. Instead, your brain simplifies the things you see into very simplistic abstract representations. Take reading for example. You don't actually sound out every word. Instead, your brain takes in the entire word and the basics of its shape. That's why you can read words like "teh" as the and why it is slightly more difficult to read ALL UPPERCASE. (the brain is a mysterious place - did you know that people remember experiences in the third person?)

Anyway, check out these smilies: :) :stolid: :Puzzled: Pretty amazing that such simplistic representations of the face (they don't even have noses or eyebrows) can convey pretty complex emotions. Your brain sort of fills in the rest.

Mellonballer
it could be because I have a very simple mind that can only wrap itself around so much detail. who knows.

I think my synapses are on the fritz.

I'm a total mark for Eric Vinyard, who draws Combustible Orange, sure it's the comic I write, but even prior I was very impressed. Don't take this as an advertisement as I don't want to blatantly whore us out, but some of his art is just amazing. I just grabbed a few pics of his that aren't from our comic, except for the last one:

Angel (http://s200.org/misc/angel.gif)
Rude Rabbit (http://s200.org/misc/rabbit.gif)
Space Hero! (http://s200.org/misc/spacehero.gif)
Group drawing of Combustible Orange cast (http://www.combustibleorange.com/forum/templates/subSilver/images/logo.gif)

I love Frame 3 of this (http://www.combustibleorange.com/z004.php) comic, I just think it's really well composed, all I said was "character in front of American flag" and that's what Eric came up with. I also really dig the first and second frames of this (http://www.combustibleorange.com/z005.php) comic (even though the inking is kindof scratchy on the bosses face in the later frames).

For comics that aren't ones I've written, I have really enjoyed the development in the Penny Arcade art style. I'm happy to see that Gabe is really challenging himself on a day to day basis now. I like the mild "brushed" and "sketchy" feel it has now. It's really clean and I find Penny Arcade is a comic that has a very different unique art style compared to most comics, both books and strips.

I also agree that Machall is an utter joy to look at. I also really enjoy Angst Technology (http://www.inktank.com), Inktank's art is really different to look at and I find it incredibly appealing. For alternative art, I pick Ornery Boy (http://www.orneryboy.com). Just clean and simple, reminds me of Southpark except with really stark lines, colours, and some serious artistic talent behind it.

Edit - Replaced the TIFs with GIFs

Squidi -

"Eye candy" seems to infer, to me at least, that it was something drawn for the sole purpose of creating something pretty to look at.

Maybe I should have picked a better name for the thread, but I was shooting for anything that looks good. Including those that are drawn just to look good and those that look good in addition to being good.

Also, thanks for all the recomendations. I've got my fair share of reading to catch up on. (I can't believe that I forgot MacHall in my original post... stupid stupid me...)

skoolmunkee
Just glancing through my webcomic list, I'll list the ones whose art I like the most..... but I agree with the kind of condescending definition of eye candy. I like the art on these comics because they impress me for some reason or another.

MacHall and PA of course- they're always working on their style and such
64 Demons- detailed and stuff, stark black and white (http://www.sixtyfourdemons.com)
Butternutsquash - Ramon freakin' oozes style, god damn him >_< (http://www.butternutsquash.net)
Sacred Pie - I dunno, it's just really well done altogether. I'm biased, but I really appreciate a well done (but still accurate and stuff) iconic style over a more detailed super-anal style. Yay for art teachers with web comics. (http://www.sacredpie.com)
Sinfest - He uses a line so well! Some of his panels and poses get pretty stale though. (http://www.sinfest.net)
Return to Sender - I just love it. Shame she'll probably never update again. (http://rts.lunistice.com)

Schmoo
I love the style of everything on atomictoy.org (http://www.atomictoy.org).

Maelstrom
Hmm...I'm liking the art in the 10k Commotion (it's down right now...), and Spades (http://www.origamiflowers.net/spades.html). And although it's not really my kind of art, I think MacHall and VG Cats look really nice.

fiftyandhalifax
i am the best artist here and everyone knows it.
