    TWC Ideas being accepted

I am trying to come up with ideas to promote less known comics in TWC.

These would be ideas like being able to vote on an Up and Coming list that would showcase comics that were not in the top 20 but people thought deserve to be.

Maybe another Ad Hoc list where people could submit great comics but don't want or need to be in a list, etc.

These would probably be listed in a small list to the left, under the advertising, with a link going to a page for each list.

I'd like more your ideas, post them here!  I'm preparing my site layout over the next two weeks then I'll start the actual programming.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

Why not have a side list displaying 1 to 5 random comics in the Top 200 that aren't in the Top 20 each day? (The comics would be static on a given day, nad then randomise the next day. Each comic could only appear once each month.

Or, do free advertising a la the wackybox like webcomicslist.com has.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

Use the most recent update feature you already have included that works with SeeIT Strip (and obviously can be included with other scripts or done manually)

Get rid of incentives. The people in the top 20 are the people not with good comics but the ones with good incentives.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

I actually want to enhance abilities with the SeeIT strip, but I don't think we'll be getting rid of incentives anytime soon, as people and I actually like visiting comics for their incentives.

List the IP address of the last 50 votes.

    Ability to write reviews.

Ability to give comics a score (1 to 10.) and then have a "list by highest score" option.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

I like the random idea, especially as someone who seems to be getting a good number of hits on my comic, but not a lot of votes. Might be cool to have a separate randomizer for each category/genre. So, the main page might show comics ranking up to the 200s randomly, but the other pages would show comics with lower rankings because of the filters.

(Hm, I hope that's translatable. I'm not being particularly eloquent this morning)

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

I agree that the top 10 is fairly static, but I'm not sure about the random idea... unless it is a new random draw per page view. In other words, every time you visit the page, it is a new random comic, and only one, located somewhere near the top of the page.

Perhaps on the side there can be a "Newest member" link?

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

Well, if the randomizing was done via javascript or suchlike, it would generate a different random comic with each page view on a client system.

I've seen newest member on some other sites, but that wouldn't do much for people already on the site, and new members generally don't have a very large archive with which to woo a new audience yet.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

I just wouldn't want to impliment a feature that would render the very concept of a top 10 list null and void. Comics near the top, theoretically, should be near the top for a reason. Even though many good comics will be randomly selected to get in that slot, it will be difficult to avoid having it become "the looser's slot."

The option to rank by score would allow lesser-known comics to get near the top based on quality rather than fan base.

A newest member option, although not usefull to anyone on the list now, would still be a nice way to help new comics. I would have loved something like that when I began almost 5 years ago (or when I joined the list last month.)

I'm trying to think of another way to shake up the top 10 while maintaining the very purpose of the list...

thoughts on that in a later post

Bunny Bunny! [bunny] Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

I rather like the Hall of Fame that Buzzcomix has (do they still have it?) where comics that achieve number 1 status a certain number of months get shifted to a hall of fame for a while to give room for other comics to make it onto the top 10.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

What about an option for viewers of the list to show all the comic banners, instead of just for the top 10? That way people with slow connections could still view it as is, but those with faster could get more info at a glance.

Stick out tongue [:P] Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

Like someone already said, do a random comics (5 is the max) of new and up-in-coming comics and keep them for a week. And they have to deserve to be up there.

ow about the "movers and shakers" aka what comics have made the biggest shift in the last hour. This would be much like how Alexa ranks websites.

One of the old top 100 lists had a small number to the side that showed how many ranks a comic went up or down since the previous minut or so.

    Re: TWC Ideas being accepted

I would really like to be able to have my current rank displayed dynamically as text instead of using the web banners, so I can make my own banner that matches my site design with my ranking displayed alongside it.  Something like this would probably save on bandwidth and resources on your side, too.
